Aspen Crane is a wooded lakefront site in Southeastern Minnesota. When we arrived, the site was entirely overtaken by Buckthorn. The first phase involved heavy removal of the invasive Buckthorn to reestablish native understory.
67 native trees were planted within the new woodland openings: mostly Eastern White Pine, Eastern Red Cedar, Aspen, Paper Birch, Maple, and Ironwood. A native seed mix was spread throughout the newly opened understory to establish quick cover to keep the Buckthorn at bay.
Near the home, the site turns to perennial gardens and outdoor spaces that frame views into nature. Granite walls and sculptures are found throughout the site. At the heart of the site, a stainless steel water feature provides moments of calmness and reflection.
